Luxury Cape Town Tour

There’s no wrong season for Africa

You’re thinking of a trip to Southern Africa. Your time is limited, and you only have certain dates you can get away…..will those dates be a good time to travel to Africa? For us, the answer is always yes. The beauty of Southern Africa is that there is something to enjoy in each season. Different regions have “high season”, “low season”, “green season”….what does it all mean? Will it be a good time of year to travel to the destinations you have in mind? Read on for the best times of year to visit Southern Africa.

January – March: Summer in the South Cape & Turtle Time in KwaZulu-Natal Best for: Cape Town (year-round), Garden Route (year-round), KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape Safaris (year-round)

  • Cape Town is buzzing with beach life, vineyard lunches, and sunset hikes—summer at its best. See it on our Cape Town Essentials Tour.
  • The Garden Route is a wonderful year-round destination thanks to its temperate climate and staggered rainfall. Think lush forests, river adventures, and scenic coastal towns. Explore the Garden Route in a Garden Route Group Tour or Garden Route Private Tour. 👉 Tip: Avoid late December to early January if you prefer tranquillity—it’s local holiday season, with prices and crowds at their peak.
  • KwaZulu-Natal offers a tropical beach escape, with warm ocean temperatures ideal for swimming and snorkelling. It’s also turtle nesting season (Nov–Feb) in iSimangaliso Wetland Park—an unforgettable wildlife experience. Go there in our Forest, Beach & Bush Holiday: the Natural Beauty of Kwa-Zulu Natal.
  • Summer months are low season in Kruger, Victoria Falls & Botswana, as the weather is hot and rainy in places. However, this season can be considered for travel if you don’t mind the weather challenges, and can offer lower prices than the rest of the year.

April – May: Autumn Tranquillity & Coastal Calm

Best for: Cape Winelands, Whale Coast (pre-season), Kruger (early dry season), Eastern Cape Safaris (year-round), Cape Town (year-round), Garden Route (year-round)

  • The Cape Winelands turn golden with autumn hues—ideal for slow travel, cellar tastings, and crisp vineyard walks. Enjoy it on our Cape Winelands Private Tour.
  • The Whale Coast (Hermanus and De Kelders) is quiet and calm before the whale watching peak season—perfect for scenic drives and cliffside stays.
  • Kruger transitions into dry season, and sightings begin to improve.
  • Eastern Cape safaris, including Addo Elephant National Park, are malaria-free and great year-round, offering consistent wildlife and diverse landscapes. Choose a lodge for an Eastern Cape safari.
  • April and May are called “shoulder season” (in tourism we call it secret season) for Botswana and Victoria Falls. Expect good safaris and weather, less crowds and lower prices.

June – October: Wildlife, Whales & Wildflowers

Best for: Kruger, Okavango Delta, Chobe, Victoria Falls, Hermanus, KwaZulu-Natal (winter beach), West Coast & Klein Karoo, Eastern Cape Safaris (year-round), Garden Route (year-round)

  • Winter is one of the best times to visit Kruger National Park. The bush becomes less dense as vegetation thins out, making it easier to spot wildlife, especially around waterholes and rivers. Clear skies, mild days, and minimal rain make for exceptional safari conditions. Choose a lodge in the greater Kruger for an iconic Kruger safari.
  • The Okavango Delta comes alive with seasonal floodwaters between June (as early as May) and August (as late as October), fed not by local rain, but by distant summer rainfall in Angola that slowly makes its way down the Okavango River. This annual flood transforms the Delta into a lush, navigable wonderland—perfect for mokoro (dugout canoe) adventures, water safaris, birding, and boat-based wildlife viewing. It’s a surreal experience floating silently through papyrus-lined channels, with elephants and antelope feeding on the islands. Combine the Delta with other destinations with our Best of Botswana package.
  • As Botswana’s dry season intensifies, enormous herds of elephant and other game migrate toward the Chobe River, making July to October the peak time for wildlife concentration. The Chobe River itself typically peaks around June or July, attracting thousands of animals to its banks. River safaris at this time are unforgettable, offering close-up views of elephants swimming, buffalo herds drinking, and predators lurking nearby.
  • Always a breathtaking sight, Victoria Falls is especially rewarding between June and August—with strong water flow, good visibility, and less mist, making it easier to explore both sides of the gorge.
  • Southern right whales arrive in June along the coast to calve and breed, offering world-renowned land-based whale watching from Hermanus and De Kelders. Go there for a day on our Wines & Whales tour, or enjoy exploring this beautiful coastline in our Ultimate Holiday.
  • While much of Southern Africa cools down, KwaZulu-Natal’s subtropical coast remains pleasantly warm. Winter is a fantastic time to enjoy its beaches, explore the Drakensberg, and experience fewer crowds.
  • From August to September, arid landscapes burst into bloom during the brief but dramatic wildflower season. Head to Namaqua National Park, West Coast National Park, or the Klein Karoo to witness this floral spectacle.
  • Winter months (May – July) is low season for Cape Town & the Cape Winelands. Although we consider Cape Town a year-round destination, most of the rainfall is received during the winter, and June – July can be quite rainy, cold and wet.
  • This time of year is also winter in the Garden Route, with cooler temperatures, but the Garden Route experiences a more moderate climate and less daytime rainfall than Cape Town, giving the Garden Route many sunny, crisp, pleasant winter/spring days.

November – December: Green Season & New Life

Best for: Kruger (baby season), KwaZulu-Natal (turtle hatchlings), Eastern Cape Safaris (year-round), Cape Town (year-round), Garden Route (year-round)

  • In Kruger and Botswana, the rains bring new life to the bush—lush greenery, baby animals, and returning birdlife.
  • KwaZulu-Natal is home to another natural marvel—turtle hatchlings (Nov–Jan). Watch the tiniest travellers make their first journey to the sea.
  • Cape Town shakes off spring and steps into summer—perfect for festive markets, patio dining, and beach adventures.
  • Eastern Cape reserves like Shamwari and Addo continue to shine with reliable wildlife sightings and malaria-free safaris.
  • The Garden Route is great this time of year, just warming up enough to begin to swim in the Indian Ocean.
👉 Tip: Avoid late December to early January if you prefer tranquillity—it’s local holiday season, with prices and crowds at their peak.
