Frequently Asked Questions

This isn’t another generic Garden Route loop. You’re accessing three of South Africa’s most exclusive biodiversity hotspots in one journey – places most tourists never see. Grootbos sits atop the world’s smallest but most diverse floral kingdom (with 70% endemic species). Lekkerwater is the only lodge inside De Hoop’s whale nursery – Southern Rights swim right past your bedroom. Sanbona is the Western Cape’s only Big Five reserve. Critical fact: 99% of travelers to the Western Cape never visit any of these three reserves.
No. Southern Right Whales calve in De Hoop from July to November, with peak sightings August-October. Outside these months, you’ll see dolphins year-round but no whales. Hard truth: Even in season, whales follow their own schedule – we can’t control wildlife. One useful fact: De Hoop has the highest concentration of Southern Right Whale calves on Earth, with over 40% of the global population visiting these waters annually.
Moderate to challenging. You’ll hike through milkwood forests and fynbos terrain at Grootbos, scramble over rocky intertidal zones at De Hoop, and take 4-hour game walks in the Karoo heat at Sanbona. All locations have steep pathways and uneven terrain. Reality check: If you can’t comfortably walk 5km on uneven ground or climb in/out of a Land Cruiser without assistance, you’ll struggle at Sanbona. One overlooked detail: Lekkerwater’s beach lodge has no elevator and several staircases between levels.
Sanbona’s 54,000-hectare reserve has fewer animals but more privacy than crowded Kruger. You’ll reliably see white rhino, elephant, giraffe, eland, and zebra. Lions and cheetah are present but sightings aren’t guaranteed like in Kruger. Critical difference: Sanbona is malaria-free and has unique desert-adapted species like Cape mountain zebra and riverine rabbit. Weak spot: If Big Five ticking is your only goal, this isn’t the safari for you. Useful fact: Sanbona has reintroduced over 50 species to this former sheep farm, creating the largest conservation success story in the Western Cape.
December-January. Grootbos and De Hoop become unbearably hot (35°C+), whale season has ended, and Sanbona’s dust makes game viewing miserable. Strong winds at De Hoop often cancel marine activities. Reality check: This is peak holiday season when South African families book out coastal areas. One hard truth: Summer rates are 25% higher but deliver 40% less wildlife viewing value than winter months.
Within limits. You can swap lodge categories (subject to availability), extend stays at any location, or add Cape Town days at the beginning/end. You cannot remove the biodiversity focus or substitute generic sightseeing. Critical constraint: Grootbos and Lekkerwater have only 12 rooms each – major changes require 90+ days notice. One useful fact: Most clients customize by adding a Cape Winelands day between Grootbos and Cape Town – something we can arrange seamlessly.
None. This is a completely malaria-free safari experience. Sanbona Wildlife Reserve has zero malaria risk year-round, unlike northern Kruger or Botswana destinations. All locations fall well outside South Africa’s malaria zones. One important detail: No prophylaxis means children can join this safari without medication concerns – making it ideal for families who want authentic wildlife without health risks.
Extremely remote. Grootbos has patchy cell service but reliable WiFi. Lekkerwater has no cell reception at all – only limited satellite WiFi for emergencies. Sanbona has zero connectivity in the bush vehicles and minimal signal at the lodge. Reality check: This is a digital detox tour whether you want it or not. One useful fact: All lodges have dedicated communication rooms with proper internet if you absolutely must check emails – but don’t expect to stream Netflix from your room.
Transportation logistics. The quoted price includes transfers but not the time costs: It takes 3.5 hours to drive from Sanbona back to Cape Town on your final day. Most international flights out of Cape Town depart after 6pm, leaving you either rushing your final game drive or missing your flight. Smart move: Add an extra night in Cape Town before departure. One overlooked expense: SANParks conservation fees at De Hoop (R120pp/day) aren’t explicitly mentioned in the inclusions.
Yes, with major caveats. Minimum ages vary by lodge: Grootbos (8+), Lekkerwater (12+), Sanbona (6+). The slow pace of biodiversity-focused activities frustrates children under 10. Game walks at Sanbona require sitting quietly for 3-4 hours. Hard truth: This isn’t a theme park safari – if your children expect constant animal sightings or have short attention spans, consider our Garden Route group tour instead. One useful exception: Grootbos offers excellent child-focused nature programs that most kids genuinely enjoy.
